Senior Rotating Electric Machinery Engineer

American Superconductor is seeking an experienced rotating electric machines engineer for focused project work. The successful candidate will work directly with an engineering based team to develop advanced superconducting rotating machinery for military and commercial applications.   The successful candidate will have a strong background in rotating machinery electromagnetic analysis, design, manufacturing practices and testing procedures. The rotating machines engineer is expected to take responsibility machine design, supervise machine fabrication and direct machine testing, therefore, a demonstrated ability to drive detailed design packages through fabrication and floor assembly and test is a definite plus.  Technical knowledge of superconductor function and application is also a plus.  The candidate should have extensive knowledge of rotational machinery industrial standards. 
 
Function:
 
  • The candidate will use experience in rotating machine design, manufacture and test to develop next generation superconducting rotating machinery for the military and commercial application.
  • The candidate will be familiar with electric machine modeling including DQ axis theory and development of the full impedance matrix.  This will include static and dynamic modeling of electric machines in 2 and 3D.
  • The candidate will assume design responsibility for rotating machinery equipment, including the overall assembly as well as the sub-assembly components
  • The candidate will work with both internal and external project partners and vendors
  • The candidate will support the business development activity in the way of product presentations, design/program reviews as well as test reporting
  • The candidate will be required to travel periodically (10-15%)
 
Minimum requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering required, Advanced degrees strongly preferred.
  • 10 years of demonstrated rotating machine design experience.
  • 10 years experience using a solid modeler.
  • 10 years experience with 2 and 3D electromagnetic modeling of electric machines.
  • The individual should be capable of working effectively in a multidisciplinary team consisting of scientists, engineers, and support personnel (machinist-technicians).
  • Strong knowledge fabrication practices with the design of machined parts and welded fabrications.
  • Excellent communication skills.Capability to communicate clearly and professionally with all management levels of the organization, as well as with the customer and program partners.
     
    Desired skills:
  • Proficiency with Opera 3D modeling
  • Proficiency with FEM 2D modeling including LUA scripting is a plus.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD system.
  • Open minded design philosophy with innovative problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of superconductivity and/or superconducting applications
  • Experience in cryogenic and vacuum system design, including use of materials, welding and brazing preparations, and a basic understanding of insulation and heat transfer principles is a plus.
