Power Electronics Engineer

Reporting to the Product Engineering Manager, this Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for supporting NPD and CIP projects.

Essential Duties:
  • Technical lead on new product development (NPD) and continuous product improvements (CIP) projects.
  • Designing and simulating power electronics circuits for new products.
  • Modifying existing power electronics circuits for CIP or component replacement for obsolete parts.
  • Developing detail circuit designs for power electronics PCBs.
  • Conducting technical reviews and communication to AMSC management and customers.
  • Authoring technical documents including requirements, design documents, and test reports.
  • Supporting internal and external customers on technical issues.
  • Preparing design documents including bills-of-material, schematics, cable and wiring harnesses and assembly diagram.
  • Selecting and/or specifying components and parts for products including IGBTs, gate drivers, transformers, circuit breakers, capacitors, reactors, switchers, relays, bus bars etc.
  • Conducting design verification tests and supporting agency type tests as needed.
  • Selecting and qualifying new vendors.
  • Conducting failure and root cause analysis on returned units.
  • Occasional travel maybe required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is required. MSEE preferred.
  • 10+ years experience in power electronics design for large power converters.
  • Experienced designing large converters and inverters from 100’s of kW to MW.
  • Experienced designing with power components: IGBTs, Capacitors, output filters, gate drives, sensors etc.
  • Experienced designing power electronics circuits and leading circuit board layouts for power applications.
  • Experienced with design tools for schematic capture, simulations, and PCB layout, e.g.Orcad PSPICE/schematic capture and Altium.
  • Experienced leading a small project team.
  • Experienced with Engineering Change Orders (ECO) process.
  • The following experience and background are definite pluses:
  • Knowledge of Dynamic and static VAR Compensation grid connected systems.
  • Designing products for electric utilities and renewable applications.
  • Medium voltage (1 kV to 36 kV) experience.
  • Experience with Agile, Oracle, and Matlab for simulations.
  • Conducted DFMEA or FMECA and root cause analysis.
  • Designing for reliability.
  • ISO 9001 environment and gate stage process.
  • Excellent skill in trouble shooting and in developing solutions to power electronics problems.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated in team-oriented work environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Has leadership skills.
