Transmission Planning & Applications Engineer

Overview
Support Business Development, Sales and Engineering of AMSC Products and Solutions through power system studies and expertise in transmission/distribution planning. Be an industry advocate for AMSC technologies and solutions. This position reports to Manager of Network Planning and Applications
 
 
Functions 
  • Performs power systems analyses pertaining to transmission and distribution system expansion, voltage stability, reliability, power quality analysis, etc. and derive technical solution options to meet customers’ requirements.
  • Performs detailed analysis of industrial power quality problems and designs/recommends appropriate solutions.
  • Performs studies and recommends solutions for renewable generation integration on to the transmission grid.
  • Uses various network analysis software packages to perform detailed load flow, dynamic stability, reliability, and system expansion and power quality study to assess system requirements and determine appropriate solution mitigation options with current or innovative new technologies.
  • Undertake detailed application and design studies for AMSC’s products including FACTS systems, power electronic converters, energy storage solutions, fault current limiters and high capacity superconductor cable systems.
  • Actively work to build relationships with utility planners, system operators, renewable plant developers, study consultants and other engineers in the industry.Additionally, work to touch all influence points, both technical and non-technical functions driving advocacy for the AMSC’s products.
  • Assists in development of competitive proposal for new ways of improving transmission and distribution system capacity and reducing transmission system costs.Proposals need to include technical as well as commercial analysis.
  • Maintains a very thorough knowledge of the current developments in the overall energy sector, particularly in the generation and transmission areas, in regards to legislative trends and requirements and how they can affect AMSC’s business goals.
  • Develop, maintain and provide support for software models for all products.
  • Actively participates in evaluation of energy market trends and needs.
  • Actively participate in the existing product development and new product market needs analysis
  • Performs appropriate economic evaluations of alternative transmission and distribution system expansion plans to accompany technical evaluations of recommended alternatives.
  • Perform or assist in performing insulation coordination, arc flash and TOV type studies.
  • Preparing and delivering technical papers and presentations for trade shows and technical conferences.
  • Preparing, maintaining and leading 1-2 day workshops to educate the industry on voltage stability, renewable integration, and power quality challenges.Independently manage projects and customers, and collaborating with internal AMSC team (including the engineering, software team, product line managers, and sales manager

 
Requirements
 
BS Electrical Engineering required, and 5-10 years of experience in the power sector with emphasis in power systems analysis, specifications, design and/or operation. Power Utility, Transmission and Distribution Planning experience a plus.
 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of network analysis software to perform load flow, stability, reliability, and power quality analysis using a one of the major softwares such as Siemen’s PSS®E or GE’s PSLF. Working knowledge of DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP, EMTP-RV, SKM PowerTools, and PowerWorld considered a plus.  Knowledge of Cyme, Synergi, Milsoft, or other distribution planning software tools also considered a plus. 
  • Understanding of power electronic devices, controls and systems, FACTS devices and their applications in utility and industrial environment.
  • Ability to develop and/or modify/adapt loadflow, stability, and EMTP software models for AMSC’s products as needed.
  • Comfortable working directly with customers.Able to generate interest in a unique product solution taking into account all levels within a customer’s organization.
  • Understands power flow issues associated with the deregulation of the electric utility industry.
  • Familiarity with equipment standards and specifications.
  • Capable of collaborating and cultivating customer relationships through interaction with customers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Job requires writing many clear and concise reports, as well as technical presentations to customers.
  • Job involves writing of one technical paper per year.
  • Up to 40% travel (local and International) may be required under some circumstances.  Flexibility is appreciated.
