HTS Cable Project Engineer

Overview:

American Superconductor is seeking a highly qualified power cable engineer to assist in the development and deployment of multiple superconductor cable projects. The successful candidate will work with a professional technical staff in support of advanced superconductor power cables product or product lines as they advance from demonstration to production stage. The engineer will draw on their expertise in conventional cable design to assist cable companies in their development efforts and to provide product input back into the AMSC superconducting wire development team to provide guidance. The engineer must also combine the superconducting wire requirements of multiple US and foreign cable manufacturing companies to the greatest extent possible.

Responsibilities:

Technical

• Drive the superconductor wire product development process through multiple projects to optimize the superconductor wire cost/performance metrics
• Work with cable companies to resolve issues related to product cost or technical performance
• Manage cable technical aspects between multiple projects
• Identify, develop and execute component development projects in support of superconductor wire product
• Seek outside funding sources when possible to minimize the cost of product development
• Become the “technical face” of AMSC to the cable companies
• Working understanding of utility power systems
• Some experience with cryogenics and/or superconductivity desirable
• Work as a technical resources across multiple projects

Business:

• Manage strategic relationships with cable partners, customers and suppliers
• Develop and foster necessary supply chain technology development
• Identify and timely respond to product business opportunities including identification of subcontractors
• Provide support to business development staff as they pursue business opportunities
• Develop, with the input of business partners, product costing and integration plans
• Assist to develop product vision and strategy

Minimum Requirements and Experience:

1. BS or higher degree with 5+ years of experience in a utility submarine cable manufacturing environment on existing product design and manufacture and new product development
2. Working knowledge of standards for cable type and production testing
3. Demonstrated and sustained experience in managing subcontractors
4. In depth knowledge of utility distribution and transmission practices
5. Experience in the commercialization of products
6. Working knowledge of MS Project
7. Self starter and independent working attributes are essential
8. Demonstrated competency in a technical field with the ability to understand complex engineered products
9. Good oral and written communication skills
10. Team player

The position level and salary will be commensurate with experience and capability.
