HTS Degaussing Systems

A vital defense for military vessels at sea

Constructed principally of steel, modern military ships disturb the earth’s natural magnetic fields—disturbances that sensors and weapons such as naval mines can detect.

Running the length of a ship, degaussing coils counteract the vessel’s inherent magnetic field. As a result, the ship is magnetically invisible. Simply put, degaussing coils are indispensable to the security of military ships and their personnel.

Applying new superconductor technology to a decades-old concern

AMSC has designed a 21st-century degaussing system that replaces bulky traditional copper coils with streamlined, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coils. These superconductor degaussing systems bring numerous benefits to today’s military vessels:

  • Significantly lighter weight. Potentially as much as ten times lighter than copper-wire systems
  • Smaller size. Fewer degaussing loops are needed for HTS systems, giving naval architects more options for fuel, payload and future shipboard systems
  • Higher electrical efficiency. HTS wire has zero resistance, which eliminates energy losses and reduces power supply requirements.
  • Environmental safety. HTS degaussing systems utilize stable, helium-based cooling and cryogenic systems.
  • Lower installation and lifetime cost. Reduced system weight and size translates into reduced installation time and expense. Increased efficiency results in lower operating costs.
