Motors and Generators for Electric Ships
Today nearly 100 percent of all cruise ships and many cargo ships have transitioned to electric motor propulsion systems and the U.S. Navy has announced its intention to transition to electric propulsion.
AMSC has delivered high temperature superconductor (HTS) motors to the U.S. Navy and will partner with commercial ship builders on design and development of motors and generators for megayachts and cruise ships. >>More on superconductor motors and generators
Other future forms of transportation using superconductor materials include magnetic levitation (maglev) trains like the ones in Japan, ferry boats and LNG tankers.
Power Converters for Transportation
AMSC manufactures the PowerModule™ power converter that is being designed into a variety of commercial and military transportation systems. One ongoing project is using the PowerModule converter in a hybrid bus.
