Superconductor Electricity Pipelines
High-capacity, high-efficiency, secure power transmission

Superconductor Electricity Pipelines leverage the best advantages of:

The result: A new breed of high-capacity, long-haul electricity transmission that’s ideal for remotely located power sources, including renewables.

Superconductor Electricity Pipelines to Power Tres Amigas SuperStation.

The Tres Amigas SuperStation has been proposed for development in eastern New Mexico. Utilizing Superconductor Electricity Pipelines, Tres Amigas will connect America’s three main power grids for the first time and create a transmission hub for the nation’s renewable energy. Learn more:

A Wealth of Benefits for Utilities and the Public

Long-distance green power delivery. Superconductor Electricity Pipelines can carry gigawatts of wind, solar, geothermal and hydro power from multiple remote generation sites to multiple cities.

The solution to difficult siting problems. Conventional overhead transmission lines require new corridors as wide as 600 feet. Siting new lines is time-consuming and often litigious—major roadblocks to the development of new renewable power sources in the U.S. Superconductor Electricity Pipelines, on the other hand, require a corridor that is just 25 feet in width. They’re perfect fits for existing railroad and highway rights of way.

Improved aesthetics. Rising more than 100 feet above ground, conventional high-voltage towers have a significant adverse aesthetic effect on neighborhoods, national parks and sensitive wildlife areas. Superconductor Electricity Pipelines, however, are out of sight, out of mind and free from electromagnetic fields.

Increased security. Their underground locations protect Superconductor Electricity Pipelines from naturally occurring damage and man-made destruction.

Enhanced efficiency. Power losses are two to three times less than with conventional transmission lines—translating to greater return-on-investment and reduced carbon emissions. Furthermore, the DC links employed in Superconductor Electricity Pipelines can move power seamlessly between large, regional interconnection areas.

Simplified cost allocation. Superconductor Electricity Pipelines deliver power via DC-AC on- and off-ramps. This system enables more precise current control and much simpler cost allocation across affected utilities than newly constructed AC transmission lines would permit.

Cost competitiveness. On top of all these benefits, Superconductor Electricity Pipelines are comparable in cost to 765 kV AC overhead transmission lines.
