WindWind energy has emerged as the fastest growing source of energy, with 120,791 MW installed throughout the world at the end of 2008 according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). They project that the total cumulative worldwide capacity could exceed 1,000GW by 2020. As the total base of installed wind capacity continues to grow with the installation of additional wind turbines and new wind farms, compliance with interconnection criteria becomes increasingly important. In many cases, dynamic voltage regulation and continuous power factor correction are required to keep wind turbine generators online, assuring that the business interests and reliability expectations of both wind developers and utilities are met.

Utility-Smart GridUtilities today are facing new pressures brought on by a combination of load growth, the introduction of competition, and insistent customer demands for improved power quality and reliability. Current efforts aimed at deregulating the transmission and distribution of electricity and the higher power quality requirements are necessitating utilities to quickly react to changing market conditions. AMSC provides a host of other Smart Grid technologies that address grid reliability, efficiency and utilization. Our D-VAR® technology and SVCs, for instance, interact with the grid on a real-time basis to regulate voltage, prevent blackouts and relieve congestion on existing transmission lines.
