AMSC 5 MW HTS Ship Propulsion Motor
Engineering the future of Navy warship propulsion
|
|
Commissioned in 2002 by the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research, AMSC’s 5 MW high temperature superconductor (HTS) motor represented the fourth ONR HTS motor technology contract with AMSC. It also represented our greatest advance in ship propulsion to date. |
Testing summary: Success by design
In March 2003, engineers at our Rugby, England facility conducted IEEE 115 open circuit and short circuit testing on the motor final assembly. Overall, tested motor parameters were in alignment with calculated parameters.:
- Open circuit testing at the rated operating speed of 230 rpm demonstrated the stator design voltage of 4160 volts.
- Short circuit testing determined and demonstrated the rated stator operating current of 722 amps. This test also demonstrated that the stator cooling complied with design requirements.
- The open circuit (core and eddy current) losses were consistent with the design.
- The open circuit and short circuit tests determined the total losses for the full load operating conditions. These tests also demonstrated the full load efficiency to be greater than the contract goal of 96%.
- Testing demonstrated the functionality of the brushless exciter, controls and telemetry.
- The cryogenic system and high temperature superconductor coils operated precisely as designed.
- Stray field measured below one gauss at one cm away from the frame.
- Electrical parameters met calculated values, confirming the design approach.

For load testing, engineers integrated the motor with an ALSTOM VDM 5000 commercial drive and a dynamometer. Testing was a total success, confirming full speed and full torque under load.
