D-VAR® and D-VAR RT Systems
Reactive power compensation for a more reliable power grid
Classified as Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, AMSC’s D-VAR and D-VAR RT systems employ a proprietary control and monitoring system that detects voltage disturbances and instantaneously compensates for them. When disturbances occur, the D-VAR system injects leading or lagging reactive power (measured in VARS, or volt amperes-reactive) in precise amounts precisely where it is needed on the grid.

D-VAR systems are highly scalable and mobile solutions that allow utilities to install
them in their power grid at locations that need the greatest amount of VAR support.
Interconnectivity solutions for every wind energy application
AMSC offers two different dynamic reactive power compensation devices:
- D-VAR Systems. Our proprietary grid interconnection technology is installed at wind farm substations to provide the critical dynamic reactive compensation required to safely connect entire wind farms to the grid.
- D-VAR RT Systems. Introduced in 2009, the D-VAR RT enables individual wind turbines to meet newly emerging grid interconnection requirements being applied to new and existing turbines worldwide.
D-VAR: world-leading STATCOM solution
Around the globe, more AMSC D-VAR solutions are in service than any other inverter-based STATCOM. You’ll find AMSC D-VAR systems handling the following types of issues:
- Localized voltage collapse problems
- Increasing power transfer through stability limited systems
- Reducing and retiring RMR generation for voltage support
- Wind farm voltage regulation / low voltage ride through (LVRT)
- Voltage regulation on radial lines
- Voltage regulation in weak grids
- Mitigating industrial voltage transients
Extremely flexible and scalable, AMSC D-VAR systems range in capacity from 2 MVAR to hundreds of MVAR.

Experience efficiency, reliability and cost savings.
No matter the application, customers that employ AMSC D-VAR solutions will benefit from their:
- Flexibility. AMSC D-VAR devices can be deployed as a single, large-block solution or distributed at multiple sites.
- Overload capability. An AMSC D-VAR device can provide 2.67 times its VAR rating for up to two seconds for transient voltage events.
- Reliability. Completely air-cooled units deliver better cooling efficiency, greater ease-of-use and considerably lower maintenance than water-cooled systems.
- Compact design. AMSC D-VAR devices employ advanced, high-density power converters that reduce the system’s footprint.
- Robust design. In the event of a problem with one inverter in the array, the remaining inverters will remain online and running without adverse effects.
- Modularity. AMSC D-VAR devices are easy to relocate and expand to meet future requirements.
- High field availability. AMSC technicians continually monitor systems in the field via satellite, Ethernet or local phone lines and respond rapidly and effectively in the event of a fault.
- Market leadership. With more than 70 installations around the world, AMSC is the global leader in STATCOM solutions.

PowerModule Converters: The heart of every AMSC D-VAR System
Inside every AMSC D-VAR system, you’ll find an array of our PowerModule power converters. These intelligent, fully integrated, four-quadrant, high-power-density inverters produce both capacitive and inductive VARs.

D-VAR® RT Systems: Reactive power STATCOM for individual turbines
Installed inside or outside of individual turbine towers, the patent-pending D-VAR RT can be easily added to new wind turbines or retrofitted to existing turbines.
Scalable and modular like our D-VAR devices, D-VAR RT systems are comprised of PowerModule PM3000W wind turbine converters. They are suitable for use on turbines with all power ratings from hundreds of kilowatts to multiple megawatts.
Powerful and cost-effective, D-VAR RT technology provides the low- and high-voltage ride-through that wind turbines need to stay operational through grid disturbances. Since its 2009 introduction, D-VAR RT has gained rapid traction, bringing legacy turbines into compliance with new regulatory requirements, such as Spain’s interconnection requirement P.O.12.3.
