Reactive Power Static VAR Compensators

AMSC is North America’s only static VAR compensator (SVC) manufacturer.

Our SVC is a solid-state FACTS device that provides dynamic reactive power compensation based on proven thyristor technology. The Static VAR Compensator provides many benefits at the transmission, distribution and even end-user level. As the transmission networks of the world trend toward higher power transfers and longer lines, they will be driven to become more efficient to meet rising energy demands.

Installing a Static VAR Compensator at appropriate locations in the network can help stabilize weak systems, minimize line losses, increase power transfer capability and can provide greater dynamic voltage control.

Benefits provided by AMSC’s SVCs:

  • Dynamic reactive power compensation
  • Steady-state and transient stability enhancement
  • Voltage regulation
  • Power transfer capacity increase
  • Three-phase voltage balancing
  • Reduced transmission losses
  • Flicker mitigation
  • Oscillation damping

Major Static VAR Compensator Components: AMSC Static VAR Compensators - Reactive Power Flexible AC Transmission Systems Devices.
Typical Static VAR Compensator systems include the following major components:

  • Thyristor valves
  • Reactors
  • Capacitors
  • Power transformer
  • Control System

Thyristor Valves

At the heart of the AMSC Static VAR Compensator is the thyristor valve. The state-of-the-art thyristor valve applies capacitors and/or reactors in single unit steps. This allows automatic adjustment of the system capacitance and inductance, thereby maintaining voltages and responding to system events. The electrical triggered thyristor (ETT) valves are contained in transformer oil for isolation and cooling. Given that the AMSC SVC systems are fully passive and contain no moving parts, they require less maintenance and are more reliable than conventional offerings. The AMSC Static VAR Compensator does not require the typical water cooling or a large facility constructed on site to house the thyristor valves, greatly reducing installation footprint.

Thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) and thyristor switched reactor (TSR)
Each single phase branch incorporates a thyristor valve and reactor. The power output is controlled by changing the current through the reactor by the thyristor switch. The TCR provides continuous control and does not produce transients, while the TSC does not produce any harmonics.

Thyristor switched capacitors (TSC)
Each shunt capacitor in the SVC system is divided into a specified number of branches that are switched on and off via thyristor switches. The thyristor valve used in the TSC uses a stacked, anti-parallel thyristor-diode arrangement. This design lowers thermal losses and provides increased robustness. Since switching occurs during zero voltage across the thyristor, no transients are produced. The TSC provides stepped control with low losses and no harmonics.

Advanced Digital Control
AMSC’s digital master control system provides flexible digital control and easy parameter adjustments. The control system utilizes two computers with industrial-grade processing capabilities; one controls the entire SVC system while the other data collection system ensures that all aspects of the SVC are functioning properly. The control system interfaces directly with the customer SCADA system and can be controlled both remotely and locally. The graphical user interface (GUI) enables customers to view and control SVC system parameters in a user-friendly manner. All aspects of connecting to the system, security, monitoring and commanding can be accomplished with this interface, either inside the local control building or from remote locations.

The Power of Flexible AC Transmission Systems Devices

As electricity demand continues to rise rapidly, there is an immediate need to increase the quality and reliability of power supplying today’s highly complex and digital economy. Environmental concerns, permitting issues and high costs have slowed the expansion and rebuilding of the current power network. Solution options such as FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices, including SVCs and D-VARs, can optimize new and existing transmission and distribution lines, making them highly efficient and capable of reliably delivering better quality power to satisfy rapidly growing energy demands.
