Summary – Job Responsibilities – Activities:
AMSC is seeking a Cryogenic & Thermal Systems Engineer to support the design, analysis, integration, and testing of superconducting and cryogenic systems. This role will focus on thermal and hydraulic system analysis, system performance evaluation, and engineering support for superconducting power applications. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop, test, and optimize cryogenic systems and related infrastructure used in advanced power and energy applications.
Functions:
- Perform thermal and hydraulic analysis of cryogenic and superconducting systems to support product development and customer projects.
- Support the design, integration, and testing of cryogenic cooling systems, piping systems, and associated equipment.
- Develop engineering calculations, models, and simulations related to heat transfer, fluid flow, thermal performance, and system operation.
- Analyze system performance data and provide recommendations for design improvements and operational efficiency.
- Support laboratory testing, prototype evaluations, and system validation activities.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and project engineering teams to support product development and customer deliverables.
- Assist with system troubleshooting, root cause investigations, and corrective action development.
- Prepare technical reports, test procedures, engineering documentation, and customer-facing deliverables.
- Support supplier interactions and technical evaluations of cryogenic system components and equipment.
- Assist with the development and execution of qualification and reliability testing programs.
- Participate in customer and project meetings to provide technical support and engineering expertise.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry developments related to cryogenic and superconducting systems.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education – Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline required.
- Master’s degree preferred; Ph.D. a plus.
- 10+ years of engineering experience in cryogenic systems, thermal-fluid systems, refrigeration systems, superconducting technologies, or related advanced engineering fields.
Required Skills, Competencies, Authorities and Training Needs:
- Demonstrated experience performing complex thermal and hydraulic analyses for engineered systems.
- Experience supporting product development, R&D, or customer-focused engineering programs.
- Experience with cryogenic refrigeration systems, liquid gas systems, superconducting technologies, rotating machinery, or energy infrastructure strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and hydraulic system design.
- Experience utilizing thermal-fluid modeling and simulation tools.
- Ability to develop engineering models and perform system-level performance analysis.
- Experience working with cryogenic refrigeration systems, liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, or other low temperature technologies preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and influence engineering decisions across disciplines.
- Basic vacuum system knowledge and the ability to analyze a vacuum system
- CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) skills are a plus
